Three unions warn of court strike starting September 16
Three Northern Cyprus public sector workers’ unions have warned of a possible strike in the courts due to staff shortages. The Turkish Cypriot Public Servants’ Union (KTAMS), the Public Workers’ Union (KAMU-İŞ) and the Turkish Cypriot Public Servants’ Union (KAMU-SEN) said they would begin a strike on September 16 if the staff shortage issue was not resolved.
Güven Bengihan, chairman of KTAMS and the Cyprus Federation of Trade Unions of Workers and Employees, recalled that on June 12 the unions had already held a protest outside the Nicosia courthouse, drawing attention to the staff shortage.
According to him, the government was given until September 15 to take the necessary measures and recruit new staff. However, despite the time that has passed, no concrete steps have been taken to resolve the problem.
Bengihan said that if there were no positive changes by September 15, KTAMS, KAMU-İŞ and KAMU-SEN would begin a strike in the courts on September 16.
