TRNC Council of Ministers expands vehicle exemption for people with disabilities: 3000 cc and £30,000

The TRNC Council of Ministers has approved new rules for the customs exemption on vehicle purchases for people with disabilities. The maximum engine capacity has been raised to 3000 cc, while the vehicle price limit is set at £30,000. The decision was announced by Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel.

The exemption frees the buyer from part of the taxes and duties charged when importing and registering a vehicle. The previous thresholds for both engine capacity and price were lower.

The list of eligible vehicles has also changed. Electric vehicles are now covered by the exemption, as are specially equipped vehicles with ramps and lifts for people who use wheelchairs.

The conditions for using the exemption remain limited. Anyone who already owns a vehicle purchased under the exemption cannot obtain a second vehicle under the same scheme. The exemption may be used again no earlier than three years after the first vehicle is registered. Applications require medical documents confirming the disability, along with compliance with the other legal requirements.

Üstel described the decision as the duty of a social state—one that does not merely provide assistance but removes obstacles for its citizens.
