Berova: TRNC budget for 2027 to exceed TL 220 billion

TRNC Finance Minister Özdemir Berova said that the budget of Northern Cyprus for 2027 will exceed TL 220 billion. The current budget stands at around TL 191 billion, with a deficit of TL 25.5 billion.

According to the minister, technical calculations have already begun: they are expected to be completed by October 31, and the draft will be submitted to the TRNC Parliament. Berova rejected claims that appeared in the press stating that the volume of government borrowing had been understated or distorted in the reporting.

A separate item in the future budget is school transportation: around TL 2.2 billion has been earmarked for it in 2027. Berova said that an agreement had been reached with transport operators on a “satisfactory fare” and that the dispute over transporting students, which began with the start of the school year, should be resolved.

The minister added that work to reinforce school buildings against earthquakes is continuing and is being carried out in compliance with safety measures, while the authorities will make a decision on fuel prices after assessing current market data.

The statements were made on Gündem Kıbrıs WEB TV. The previous TRNC budget was approved by parliament at around TL 191 billion; over several years, its nominal size had grown from TL 22 billion.
