TRNC police record 45 traffic accidents in a week, 22 people injured

Forty-five traffic accidents occurred in Northern Cyprus during the week from 17 to 23 August. Fifteen of them resulted in injuries, with 22 people hurt. Police estimated the total damage at 1,870,000 lira.

According to the weekly traffic bulletin issued by the TRNC Police General Directorate, the highest number of accidents occurred in Nicosia — 16. Famagusta and Kyrenia recorded 11 cases each, İskele 4, and Güzelyurt 3.

Traffic checks were carried out across the country during the same period. Police stopped 18,594 drivers and issued reports to 3,153 of them. A total of 226 vehicles were taken off the road, and 13 drivers were arrested.

The most common violation was speeding, with 1,109 reports issued. This was followed by driving a vehicle without a registration document — 315 cases; violations of lighting rules or driving with insufficient lighting — 148; failure to have a vehicle inspection — 129; and driving without insurance or outside its coverage — 109.

Police issued 99 reports for ignoring road signs, 95 for failure to wear a seat belt, and 81 for driving under the influence of alcohol. Drivers were also penalised 25 times for dangerous driving and the same number of times for inattentive driving; 20 for driving without a licence, 9 for talking on a mobile phone while driving, and 3 for riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
