TRNC Agriculture Department destroys shipment of imported Granny Smith apples
Following its weekly food inspection, the TRNC Agriculture Department destroyed a shipment of imported Granny Smith apples after excessive levels of plant protection product residues were found. All samples of locally produced goods were found to be clean.
The inspections are conducted by the Agriculture Department, which reports to the TRNC Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Samples taken from suppliers of imported and locally produced goods between 11 and 17 September were analysed for pesticide content at the State Laboratory.
The results were assessed against the maximum residue levels in force in the European Union. All five samples of locally produced goods were found to be clean.
Of the 40 samples of imported goods, 39 complied with the standard. Excessive levels were found in Granny Smith apples supplied by Onbaşı İşl. Ltd — the shipment was withdrawn from circulation and destroyed.
