TRNC parliamentary committee launches investigation into ship disaster off Girne
The committee of the TRNC Assembly established to investigate the disaster involving a passenger vessel near the port of Girne held its first meeting on 15 September in Famagusta, at the Port Authority building.
The vessel sank off the coast of Girne on 30 August. The committee has been tasked with determining the causes of the disaster and areas of responsibility. Deputies unanimously approved its establishment on 10 September at an extraordinary parliamentary session.
The committee comprises five deputies from two parties. Sunat Atun of the National Unity Party (UBP) was appointed chair, while Tӧberrüken Uluçay of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) became deputy chair. The remaining seats were taken by Resmiye Canaltay and Hasan Küçük (UBP), as well as Fikri Toros (CTP).
Search operations in the area of the wreck continue: on 15 September, a search vessel arriving from Turkey joined the effort.
