Fire extinguishers now mandatory in vehicles in Northern Cyprus: from 1 kg in cars and from 6 kg in buses
The Police Directorate of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) reported that, following amendments made by the Council of Ministers to the 1974 Regulation on Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic, fire extinguishers are mandatory in all motor vehicles except motorcycles.
The only exceptions are mopeds, as well as two- and three-wheeled motorcycles. All other vehicles must have a fire extinguisher weighing at least 1 kg and containing dry chemical powder or carbon dioxide.
For vehicles driven with licences in categories E, F, G and K, the minimum fire extinguisher weight is 3 kg; for trucks and buses, it is 6 kg.
The police will check for the presence of a fire extinguisher during vehicle inspections and roadside checks. “For safer driving, we will keep a fire extinguisher in our vehicles,” the directorate said in a statement, urging drivers to comply with traffic regulations and help prevent accidents.
