TRNC Meteorological Service records record wind speed of 182 km/h in Gemikonağı
Wind speed in Gemikonağı during the storm on 29 August reached 182 km/h — a record for Northern Cyprus. The previous maximum, 171 km/h, was recorded in Serdarlı in November 2024, said Sinan Güneş, director of the TRNC Meteorological Department.

According to him, the bad weather began around 10:00 in Güzelyurt and Beyarmudu, then spread across the entire country. The system moved towards the central and eastern districts, and the storm was expected to continue until 17:00, after which the rain-bearing system was due to leave the island. No precipitation is forecast for the evening, but the wind, while weakening, will remain strong in some areas.
Measurements taken at 13:30 showed that more than 30 kg of precipitation per square metre had fallen in Beyarmudu, Akdoğan, Kırıkkale and Güzelyurt. Between 20 and 30 kg was recorded in Gemikonağı, Taşpınar, Kalkanlı and Çayönü, while less than 20 kg was recorded in the remaining areas.
Nicosia Municipality reported 17 fallen trees, one downed electricity pole and two sewer breaches; crews are working in 14 areas of the city. Due to a fault on the Güneşköy–Cengizköy line, Kıb-Tek cut off electricity supplies to Güzelyurt and Lefke, while Kyrenia also experienced outages. The Ministry of the Interior placed six districts on heightened alert. Güzelyurt was the worst affected, although all roads remain open.
Temperatures on Saturday remained 3–4 degrees below the seasonal average. Tomorrow, the weather will return to levels normal for this time of year, while from the beginning of next week temperatures will rise to 40–41 °C.
