Tourists delighted by the hospitality on Arasta, but dissatisfied with the neglect of Nicosia’s historic buildings
The historic Arasta market in Nicosia experienced an unexpected influx of tourists. Hundreds of foreigners who crossed to the northern side through the Lokmaci checkpoint were very pleased with the hospitality of local traders, who treated them to tea and coffee, but voiced serious concerns about the condition of the old buildings. Through journalists, they sent a message to the authorities: «If you take care of your historical monuments, you will attract even more people here».
The bustle in the market and in the Büyük Han area pleased local shopkeepers thanks to the active buying of souvenirs and the cafes packed to capacity. However, both traders and visitors agree that the dilapidated facades and the lack of care for the valuable architecture spoil the appearance of the tourist center. They are calling on officials to immediately begin the restoration and repair of this unique cultural heritage.
