Two Turkish Cypriots conquer Mount Ararat
26-year-olds Alp Kardesh and Cahit Köprülü climbed to the summit of Mount Ararat — Turkey’s highest point, located at an altitude of 5137 metres.
The ascent lasted five days. Despite the thin air, strong winds, snow and temperatures as low as −15 °C, the athletes managed to reach the summit on the morning of 19 July.
At the summit, the young mountaineers unfurled the flag of Northern Cyprus, after which they began their descent due to deteriorating weather conditions.
According to Alp Kardesh and Cahit Köprülü, they are proud to have represented Northern Cyprus on Turkey’s highest peak. The young men also believe they may be among the youngest Cypriots to have conquered Ararat.
They dedicated their ascent to Peace and Freedom Day on 20 July, expressing hope that their example will inspire young people to take up sports and not give up on their goals.
