Ünal Üstel Announces Construction of the Main Sports Complex of the TRNC

Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ünal Üstel officially announced the launch of the design process for a new multifunctional sports complex of international standard. According to the head of government, the country’s sports budget has seen unprecedented growth during the term of the current cabinet, increasing from a symbolic 20 million lira to a historic level exceeding 1 billion lira. These investments are intended to radically modernize the island’s outdated sports infrastructure.

The prime minister explained the need for such large-scale construction by saying that the country’s largest existing stadium, commissioned back in 1982, can no longer cope with modern demands and athletes’ needs. The new ultra-modern complex will be adapted not only for football matches, but also for the needs of ten other sports disciplines. By now, the government has already fully completed the site selection stage and carried out all preliminary surveys.

As part of the preparations for the implementation of the flagship project, Ünal Üstel, together with the chairman of the Cyprus Turkish Football Federation, Hasan Sertoğlu, visited Istanbul. The sports delegation personally inspected the newest stadiums built in Turkey in recent years and reviewed presentations by leading technical specialists in the field of sports architecture. The head of government assured that the design work will be completed as soon as possible, after which the foundation laying and prompt construction of the facility will begin in the interests of the youth and the entire population of the TRNC.
