Another Epilepsy Operation Successfully Performed at Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital

Neurosurgeons at Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital have successfully carried out another vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) implantation operation for a patient with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Deputy Chief Physician of the hospital and neurosurgeon Çağın Ozankaya said that the VNS method is used for patients whose seizures continue despite medication. According to him, such therapy helps significantly reduce the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures, lower the number of hospitalizations and improve quality of life, and in some cases makes it possible to completely eliminate seizures.

Ozankaya noted that the successful performance of such operations requires the joint work of specialists from different fields. Neurologists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, psychiatrists, physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists, as well as operating room and postoperative medical teams take part in preparing and treating patients.

He stressed that thanks to a modern interdisciplinary approach, patients are not only able to undergo a complex operation but also given hope for a safer and fuller life.
