A new theatre and cultural centre to be built in Lefkoşa for 330 million lira

Construction of a new theatre and cultural centre in Lefkoşa, where work had previously been halted, is expected to be completed. The new contract is worth 330 million Turkish lira, and the project is expected to be completed by 2028.

The complex will include two theatres with 500 and 180 seats, facilities for orchestras and the performing arts, a museum, a library and educational spaces. A workshop for making stage sets is planned in the basement.

A Culture and Arts Square with an open-air venue for approximately 1,000 people is planned in front of the building. Concerts, performances, film screenings and other events will be held there.

The history of the project dates back to 1996, while construction was halted in 2012. A new redevelopment project was presented in 2022, and a new contract to continue the work was signed on 18 August 2026.

The new cultural centre will form part of a major redevelopment of the former bus terminal site. The project covers a total area of approximately 33,000 square metres, around 15,000 sq. m of which will be allocated to public open spaces, green areas, squares and pedestrian paths.

The redevelopment will also include a new terminal, commercial facilities and parking areas.
