Fundamental publication “Geography of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” presented in Lefkoşa

A presentation event accompanied by an autograph session was held at the “Saçaklı Ev” cultural center in Lefkoşa to mark the release of the new academic work “Geography of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.” The book, prepared with the support of the Ministry of Deputy Prime Minister, Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, brought together the efforts of 23 academics who are members of the Turkish Geographical Institute, including leading specialists from TRNC universities. The ceremonial event was attended by the ministry’s secretary general, Serhan Aktunç, former Prime Minister and former Speaker of Parliament Sibel Siber, as well as representatives of the bureaucracy, the academic community and non-governmental organizations.

The large-scale publication, which is about 600 pages long, consists of 18 chapters and was edited by associate professors Süheyla Uçışık Erbilen and Ahmet Ertek. The book examines in detail and from multiple angles the region’s key aspects: from the island’s geopolitical significance, geology and meteorology to the transport system, tourism, geographical indicators, as well as mineral and energy resources. According to associate professor Erbilen, the work, which took more than a year to complete, is a crucial reference source and shapes the country’s geographical memory, documenting the relationship between people and space on the basis of scientific data. “Understanding Cyprus lies through understanding its geography,” the editor stressed, expressing her gratitude to her co-authors.

In his address, the ministry’s secretary general Serhan Aktunç said that supporting such academic projects is a direct duty of the ministry and expressed confidence that the book will make a significant contribution to a deeper study of the TRNC’s potential. After the official part of the presentation, copies were distributed to the participants. The book was personally signed by associate professor Süheyla Uçışık Erbilen, as well as by the academics who made a significant contribution to writing the chapters — associate professor Serkan İlseven and Dr. Mehmet Necdet.
