In Mexico, the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially opened with a spectacular show
A ceremonial opening took place at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, marking the start of the planet's main football tournament with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. The stands of the 80,000-seat arena were packed to capacity, and due to street protests in the capital, fans had to make their way to the stadium at first light. By hosting this World Cup, Mexico entered history as the first country to stage the world championship three times after the 1970 and 1986 tournaments, while Azteca Stadium became the first venue to host the opening match three times.
The festive program two hours before kickoff included performances by Shakira, Burna Boy with the tournament's official song
