Fishing boat explodes off the coast of Karşıyaka: two injured
On Sunday, 28 June 2026, at around 13:30, an explosion occurred on a fishing boat in the waters off Karşıyaka (west of Sardunya Beach), causing a large fire. Two people were injured in the incident.
According to the police press office, the incident occurred about 20 metres from the shoreline while fishing was underway. Preliminary information indicates that the explosion was caused by a fuel leak from the boat engine's petrol tank, followed by the ignition of the vapours. The fire engulfed the vessel instantly.
The four people on board were forced to jump into the water and swam ashore on their own. Two of them suffered serious thermal burns to their legs. The injured were promptly taken to Dr. Akçiçek State Hospital in Girne, where they received the necessary medical treatment. The fishing boat itself was completely burned out in the fire and rendered entirely unusable.
