Emergency security session fails to take place in Northern Cyprus parliament

The emergency session of the Northern Cyprus parliament on public security, scheduled for today, did not take place due to the lack of the required quorum. The session was due to begin at 10:00, but lawmakers from the ruling coalition failed to provide the number of participants necessary for proceedings to begin.

Deputies from the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) condemned the government’s position and said that preventing the session from taking place was unacceptable. The extraordinary session was convened because of the growing number of security-related problems and increasing public concern. The agenda was expected to include a discussion of the government’s public security policy, the measures being taken, the effectiveness of the relevant state institutions and additional steps to improve security levels.

Some CTP deputies, as well as independent lawmakers Jale Refik Rogers from Kyrenia and Ayşegül Baybars from Famagusta, had called for the session to be held.
