TRNC Proposes Yellow License Plates for Official Taxis

Muhammet Ercan, a member of the People's Party (HP) Council, has proposed introducing mandatory yellow license plates for licensed taxi services. According to the politician, this measure would help bring order to the passenger transport sector, where the problem of the shadow economy is currently particularly acute.

The main goals of the new system:

— Monitoring and fighting illegal operators. Yellow plates would allow inspectors and traffic police to immediately identify legal carriers in the flow of vehicles. Checking vehicles would become easier, which would increase pressure on drivers operating without a license.

— Passenger safety. A clear visual distinction would help residents and tourists unmistakably choose an official taxi, ensuring a safe ride and insured risks.

Ercan emphasized that the reform should be discussed in detail with trade unions and representatives of the transport sector in order to take the interests of legal businesses into account and develop an effective long-term solution.
