Turkish parliament proposes renaming the TRNC the “Turkish Republic of Cyprus”
At a session of the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), proposals related to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) were discussed.
Mustafa Kaya, a deputy from the Yeni Yol party, said that the name of the TRNC should be changed to the “Turkish Republic of Cyprus” (Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti).
According to him, if Turkish Cypriots have a say in all matters related to the island, including natural resources and hydrocarbon deposits, there should ultimately be no division into the “north” and the “south”.
“This path should continue under the name of the Turkish Republic of Cyprus,” Kaya said.
He also accused the administration of Southern Cyprus of attempting to distinguish between Turks who lived on the island before and after 1974.
İYİ Parti deputy chair Ayşegül Türkeş said that she supports a policy based on a “two-state” solution and equality between the sides. According to her, the status of the TRNC and Turkey’s role as a guarantor should not become subjects of negotiations.
She stressed that Turkey continues to support the existence of the TRNC and opposes a return to the federation model.
