Turkey Changes School Rules: Student Searches, Scheduled Parent-Teacher Meetings and Tighter Security

Turkey’s Ministry of National Education has announced sweeping changes to school rules ahead of the new academic year. The reform will cover security, communication between parents and teachers, and the internal regulations of educational institutions. The new rules have already been published in official documents and will come into force at the beginning of the school term.

The main innovation concerns security. School administrations will officially be allowed to inspect students’ lockers, desks and personal storage spaces if there are suspicions that they contain dangerous items or objects posing a threat to school safety. Turkey’s Ministry of National Education stresses that the measure is intended specifically to prevent violence and avert emergency situations.

Another important change concerns parents. Personal meetings with teachers will now take place only by prior appointment. The authorities believe this will help organise schools’ work, eliminate unscheduled visits and give teachers an opportunity to prepare properly for conversations with students’ families.

The tightening of security measures is not happening by chance. In recent months, the protection of schools has been actively discussed in Turkey following several high-profile incidents of violence, while student safety has become one of the central issues in the country’s education policy. The authorities say that schools should be not only places of learning, but also as secure an environment as possible.

The reform is part of a broader education modernisation programme that Turkey’s Ministry of National Education has been implementing in recent years. The ministry has already introduced new educational models, changed requirements for school uniforms, revised rules for school management and launched additional training programmes for heads of educational institutions.

Thus, the new academic year in Turkey will begin not only with updated curricula, but also with noticeably stricter rules. Schools will have greater powers to ensure security, while interaction between parents, students and teachers will become more regulated.
