Smoking banned on four popular beaches in Turkey
Authorities in Turkey’s Antalya have introduced a complete ban on smoking on four well-known beaches at once. The new rules have taken effect on the Lara, Belek, Çamyuva and Beach Park coastlines, which are visited by millions of tourists every year.
The decision was made as part of the “Blue Mediterranean” environmental program aimed at combating marine pollution. One of the main problems on the beaches remains cigarette butts, which not only spoil the appearance of the resorts but also cause serious damage to the ecosystem of the Mediterranean Sea.
According to authorities, the ban is also intended to protect vacationers, especially children, from secondhand smoke. In Antalya, officials emphasize that clean beaches and a comfortable environment are becoming an important part of the city’s preparations to host the COP31 climate conference.
Violators may be subject to administrative penalties. In some areas, designated smoking zones are planned for smokers, but the use of tobacco products is now prohibited directly on the beaches.
Experts note that cigarette butts are one of the most common types of litter on seashores. Once they get into sand and water, they can take years to decompose, releasing harmful substances and microplastics. That is why many tourist regions around the world are gradually introducing similar restrictions.
For now, the new measure applies only to four Antalya beaches, but if the project is successful, the number of “smoke-free” zones on the Turkish coast may increase.
