Entry into Nicosia from Kyrenia partially restricted until the end of June due to roadworks

The Northern Cyprus Department of Highways has officially announced the start of a large-scale reconstruction of a key section of the Kyrenia — Nicosia highway as part of the TRNC General Highway Development Plan. From today, both lanes heading toward the capital on the stretch between the Irsen Küçük overpass and the Gönyeli roundabout are completely closed to traffic. According to the department’s approved regulations, road repair works on this busy city entrance will continue until 30 June this year, which will drastically change the usual traffic pattern for the coming month.

To ensure road traffic, engineering services have introduced a temporary traffic scheme by using the opposite side of the highway. The two lanes that normally lead exclusively toward Kyrenia have now been temporarily switched to reversible operation and are being used both for entry into the capital and for leaving it under the strict control of the traffic police. In addition, as an alternative route, drivers are advised to actively use the North Ring Road via the Irsen Küçük overpass, which will help partially ease the main congestion at the entrance.

In connection with the sharp change in traffic conditions approaching the Gönyeli roundabout, road services strongly urge all motorists to exercise increased caution, slow down in advance before the work zone and strictly follow the instructions of the new signs and temporary traffic lights. During peak hours, serious traffic jams are inevitable at this junction, so drivers are advised to allow extra time for the journey or choose detour routes through neighboring areas to avoid long delays in traffic.
