Truck driver arrested for illegally smuggling migrant
The court has remanded a 52-year-old truck driver in custody for three days on suspicion of illegally smuggling a migrant from Northern Cyprus to Turkey.
According to police, on July 9 the man, who worked at the port of Famagusta, hid a Syrian man in his truck and helped him board a ferry bound for Mersin without passing through immigration control. For this service, investigators say he received $3,000.
The next day, Turkish police found the Syrian migrant at the port of Mersin. After reviewing surveillance footage, investigators determined that it was this driver who had taken him onto the ferry.
The suspect was detained at the port of Famagusta. According to police, during questioning he admitted that, for payment, he had sheltered the Syrian man in his home for a day and then helped him leave Northern Cyprus secretly.
The investigation is ongoing. Police will need to interview witnesses and carry out additional investigative actions.
