A work vehicle damaged a medium-voltage line, leaving Yeniboğaziçi and neighbouring areas without electricity
Electricity supply to the village of Yeniboğaziçi and several neighbouring areas of Northern Cyprus was cut off in the afternoon of 26 August after a work vehicle hit medium-voltage lines, severing part of the wiring.
According to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus state electricity company Kıb-Tek, power was lost in the village of Yeniboğaziçi itself, in the area around Near East University Hospital, as well as in the Eyva, Cennet Restaurant, Zema Market, Salamino and Bedis areas, in the area of the old village of Tuzla and at the entrance to Tuzla, where a go-kart track is located.
Kıb-Tek said that crews were already working at the site and that repairs were under way. Residents of the affected areas were asked to take the necessary measures to prevent the outage from causing them losses.
Electricity supply remains a pressing issue in Northern Cyprus throughout August: following an accident at the Teknecik power plant, Kıb-Tek has been receiving between 20 and 50 MW from the Republic of Cyprus, while tourism workers have complained that power cuts are disrupting hotel operations.
