Three people died on the roads in a week: police intensify checks

Over the past week, three people died and another 26 suffered injuries of varying severity in road accidents across the country. This is stated in the weekly report of the Police General Directorate.

Between May 18 and 24, 66 accidents were recorded. Of these, one accident was fatal, 17 crashes resulted in injuries, and another 48 cases ended in material damage. The total damage from the accidents is estimated at nearly 3.9 million Turkish lira.

The highest number of accidents occurred in Nicosia — 24 cases. In Kyrenia, 22 accidents were recorded, in Famagusta — 9, in Iskele — 7, and in Guzelyurt — 4.

According to police, the main causes of accidents were speeding, careless driving, failure to yield at intersections, and unsafe following distances.

At the same time, the police continued large-scale road checks. Over the week, law enforcement officers checked 18,232 drivers. Violations were found in 3,137 people, against whom legal proceedings were initiated.

In addition, 344 vehicles were taken out of service, and 16 drivers were arrested.

Among the most common violations, police named speeding, ignoring road signs, driving without a technical inspection, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

The police emphasized that road checks and preventive measures will continue to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents.
