33 fires broke out in Northern Cyprus in one week, causing damage of over 6.5 million liras
From July 20 to 26, 33 fires and 30 incidents requiring the intervention of the fire service were recorded in Northern Cyprus. The total material damage caused by the fires amounted to 6 million 568 thousand 200 Turkish liras.
According to the police, possible causes of the fires included short circuits, deliberate arson, discarded unextinguished cigarettes, sparks caused by electrical wires rubbing against each other in the wind, fuel leaks in vehicles, accumulated grease catching fire in chimneys, as well as sparks from construction tools that led to dry grass catching fire.
In addition to extinguishing fires, firefighters carried out a number of rescue operations during the week. They helped animals stuck in tall trees, deep wells and vehicle engine compartments, and freed people who had become trapped in an elevator and a car.
Firefighters also conducted fire-safety briefings, carried out special assignments and transported deceased people to hospital as part of investigative procedures.
