62 road accidents occurred in Northern Cyprus in one week

Between 20 and 26 July, 62 road accidents were recorded in Northern Cyprus. People were injured in 19 accidents, while another 43 resulted only in material damage. A total of 26 people sustained injuries of varying severity.

According to the police, the main causes of the accidents were:

• speeding — 18 cases;
• failure to yield at intersections — 13;
• inattentive driving — 12;
• failure to maintain a safe distance — 10;
• other causes — 9.

Total material damage caused by road accidents during the week amounted to 3,975,020 Turkish lira.

The highest number of accidents occurred in Kyrenia — 23. It was followed by Famagusta (15), Nicosia (13), İskele (6) and Güzelyurt (5).

During the same period, police officers inspected 22,568 vehicles. Administrative reports were issued against 4,066 drivers for traffic violations.

The most common violations were:

• speeding — 1,476 cases;
• other traffic violations — 1,179;
• operating a vehicle without a valid registration permit — 448;
• driving a vehicle without a valid roadworthiness inspection — 166;
• failure to wear a seat belt — 153;
• failure to comply with road signs and markings — 145;
• lack of mandatory insurance or insurance that did not meet the requirements — 144;
• driving under the influence of alcohol — 75.

During the enforcement operations, 333 vehicles were taken off the road, and 7 drivers were detained.
