Journalists in Northern Cyprus Honored on Press Day
The Cyprus Turkish Journalists Union (KTGB) held a gala reception for Press Day, which is marked every year on July 11 to commemorate the publication of the first Turkish-language newspaper, Saded, in 1889.
TRNC President Tufan Erhürman attended the event. During the ceremony, journalists were presented with awards for professional achievements and encouragement awards, and veterans of the profession who have devoted more than 25 years to journalism were also recognized.
KTGB Chair Aişemden Akın emphasized in her speech the importance of protecting freedom of expression and independent journalism.
«We will continue to preserve the 137-year journalistic heritage that begins with the newspaper Saded. Journalism is not a crime, but the society’s right to know the truth,» she said.
This year, awards were given to journalists in categories for the best reports, investigations, photographs, television and radio programs, as well as to authors of special projects. In addition, special awards were presented for contributions to the development of journalism, culture and the arts.
