There is no single identical set of documents for everyone applying for a residence permit in Northern Cyprus. The applicant must confirm their identity, residential address, grounds for the residence permit and, where required, their financial means, insurance and health status. The exact list depends on whether a short-term, family or student residence permit is being obtained.

Short answer

The minimum set usually starts with a valid passport, proof of address and a document explaining the grounds for residence. For a short-term residence permit, housing, financial means and applicable medical requirements are also checked. A family residence permit requires documents from the supporting person and proof of family relationship, while a student residence permit requires proof of study, an address and insurance. Do not use a list from someone else’s situation: upload only documents that correspond to the selected category.

Main document package

The TRNC rules establish not one single template but a general principle: the applicant must confirm their grounds, living conditions, address and, in the cases provided for, their ability to support themselves. The Department of Immigration publishes a separate list for each type of residence permit.

• Passport or another valid travel document. Check its validity period before starting the procedure.
• Proof of grounds. This may be a title deed, purchase agreement, rental agreement, proof of income, documents from an educational institution or documents for a family residence permit.
• Proof of housing and address. The address in the application must match the residence documents.
• Proof of financial means. This is not required for every ground, but for a short-term residence permit the rules provide for proof of funds for the permit period.
• Insurance, contribution to the Health Fund and medical procedures. The set depends on the category, the applicant’s age and status.

The information in the application, uploaded files and presented originals must match. Inaccurate information or documents may result in refusal, cancellation of an already issued residence permit or refusal to extend it.

Real estate

If the grounds are related to housing, prepare a document confirming your right to the property: a title deed, purchase agreement or another document specifically related to the selected grounds. Do not declare an address that you cannot confirm. Rental

When living under a rental agreement, you need an agreement confirming the right to use the accommodation and a correct address. Income or bank funds

For some types of short-term residence permit, it is necessary to prove funds for the period of residence. The bank document must confirm the specific declared source of funds. Other grounds

If you are applying under a special ground, attach a document that directly confirms it: for example, a document concerning study, medical treatment, a programme or another status provided for by the rules. An oral explanation does not replace proof of the grounds.

Family and student residence permits

Family residence permit

In addition to the general documents, the applicant must show that the supporting person has an appropriate status and that the family relationship exists. For a family, shared housing, the address and valid insurance covering all family members are also important. Depending on the situation, the supporting person may be a TRNC citizen, a holder of a residence permit, permanent residence, a Work Permit, a business permit or a student residence permit.

Prepare the supporting person’s documents, a marriage certificate, birth certificate or other proof of family relationship, as well as confirmation of joint residence or the intention to live together. The family residence permit cannot be valid for longer than the supporting person’s legal permit.

Student residence permit

For a student, the key documents are a valid passport, proof of address and a study document. University students complete the procedure through the Department’s special online application. The insurance must remain valid for the period for which the student residence permit is requested.

If you change your university, faculty or programme, do not conceal the change. The educational institution and the student must report the change of status within one month; if notification is made on time, the current residence permit remains valid.

Foreign documents and translation

For documents issued outside the TRNC, check in advance in your personal account and with the receiving department whether a translation, certification or additional legalisation is required. There is no universal rule for all foreign documents and all grounds: it depends on the type of document, the country of issue and the authority’s current requirements.

Do not change the spelling of names, dates or addresses yourself during translation. If the passport and marriage certificate contain different transliteration variants, prepare a documentary explanation of this difference before applying.

Insurance and medical documents

Insurance and a medical report serve different purposes. For a family residence permit, valid insurance is required for all family members, while for a student residence permit it must cover the requested period. In other cases, the procedure for medical actions is determined by the category and the stages in the system.

If a positive medical report is required after the application is accepted, do not delay it: under the general procedure, it must be submitted to the Department within 30 days from the submission date. If the delay is confirmed by the medical institution or is related to the applicant’s health, the period may be extended to 60 days. 3. Check the validity period of the passport and documents proving the grounds.
4. Make sure the address is written identically in the application, agreement and family members’ documents.
5. Make readable scans of the originals and do not crop out the details.
6. Check the current list in your personal account before uploading the files.
7. After submission, monitor notifications and do not miss any scheduled actions.

Common mistakes

• The documents do not correspond to the selected grounds. A rental agreement, bank statement and title deed are not interchangeable.
• Different addresses. Even a minor discrepancy in the house number or district name raises questions.
• Outdated bank document. Use confirmation reflecting the situation as of the application date.
• Expired passport. For a short-term residence permit, the rules directly link the passport validity period to the requested permit period.

Can the same document package be submitted for any residence permit?
