How to Renew a Residence Permit in Northern Cyprus Yourself

Renewal of a residence permit in Northern Cyprus is completed through the TRNC Ministry of Interior portal on the basis currently in force. For a short-term residence permit, a renewal application must be submitted no later than 40 days after the current permit expires; for a student permit, the deadline is up to 60 days. When to renew a residence permit

Keep track of the expiry date shown on your current permit, not the date when you received it. The 2026 rules establish the final renewal deadline for each type of permit. For a short-term residence permit, including permits based on property ownership and income, the application must be submitted no later than 40 days after the previous permit expires. For a student permit, the final deadline is 60 days after expiry.

For a family permit, the deadline depends on the sponsor’s status. If the sponsor is a TRNC citizen, a holder of a permanent permit, a Work Permit or a business permit, the application must be submitted no later than 40 days after expiry. If the sponsor holds a student permit, the deadline is 60 days. For a family permit with a sponsor who holds a short-term residence permit, the deadline is up to 40 days.

These deadlines are the maximum allowed periods, not a reason to wait until the permit expires. Prepare your documents in advance and start the procedure when your personal account allows you to create an application. If the portal shows a different deadline or an additional requirement for your category, follow the instruction displayed in your personal account.

What deadlines apply to different categories

What to check before submitting

• Passport validity. It must cover the requested period with the additional validity required by the Rules for your citizenship category.
• Residential address. It must match the document confirming your accommodation.
• Grounds. The grounds must still apply upon renewal and be confirmed by up-to-date documents.
• Phone number and email address in your personal account. The Ministry of Interior sends notifications to these contacts.
• Financial documents. The threshold linked to the minimum wage is recalculated when the gross minimum wage changes.

At the time of writing, the gross minimum wage is 70,893 TL. For a short-term permit based on income, the requirement is at least 3 minimum wages per month, that is, 212,679 TL, or an annual bank balance of 2,552,148 TL. A property owner whose title is in their own name is not subject to an income requirement for this category. How to renew a residence permit yourself

1. Open the official TRNC Ministry of Interior permit portal and log in to your personal account using the phone number and email address used for notifications.
2. Select renewal on the basis currently in force. Do not change the category without documents confirming the new circumstances.
3. Check your personal details, passport, address and contact information. Correct any discrepancies before submitting the application.
4. Upload the documents required by the system for your category. The list in your personal account is the main reference for the specific application.
5. Submit the application and check its status regularly. The system may schedule the submission of originals, request an additional file, require a medical procedure or request payment.
6. Complete the assigned stage at the police station serving your place of residence if it is displayed in your account. Bring the originals and confirmations related to the application.
7. Pay only the amounts that appear in your personal account. The payment amounts depend on the category, period and current tariffs.
8. Wait for the decision and complete payment of the fees within the period specified in the notification. After a positive decision, the Rules allow 30 days to pay the required fees and obtain the permit.

Documents for renewing a residence permit

The Ministry of Interior determines the list of documents for each type of permit and may request additional information. Do not treat the list from last year’s application as final: by the time of renewal, your passport, address, income, family status or category requirements may have changed.

What to do if your address or passport changes

If you move, do not use your old address in the application. Update the address and upload a document confirming your new accommodation if the system requests it. The details in the application, rental agreement, title deed or purchase agreement must match.

If you replace your passport, enter the details of the new valid document and upload the pages required by your personal account. Do not submit a renewal application with an expired passport if it does not meet the required additional validity period. If your name, marital status or grounds have changed, prepare the supporting documents before creating the application.

Insurance, medical tests and payments

Insurance, medical checks and payments are completed in the order assigned by your personal account. Do not pay amounts shown in old screenshots or in someone else’s application. The conditions for people over 60 and for certain categories differ, so follow the requirements for your category and the current notifications from the Ministry of Interior.

What happens after submission

After the application is accepted, the immigration authority reviews the documents and, if necessary, requests additional information. The Rules allow 15 days from the date of notification to provide an additionally requested document. If the medical report is not received within the established period, the application may be rejected. If the delay is documented as being caused by a medical institution or by the applicant’s health condition, the period may be extended to 60 days.

If the application has been accepted by the authorised authority, the applicant is considered to be lawfully present in Northern Cyprus until the review is completed, for a maximum of 60 days from the submission date. During this period, the Rules allow departure and re-entry without a fine. If the permit has expired

First determine your category and how many days have passed since expiry. For a short-term permit and most family permits, the final deadline is 40 days; for a student permit and a family permit with a student sponsor, it is 60 days. After the applicable period has expired, the police do not accept the application directly, except in cases where a person is entitled to a special procedure provided for by the Rules.

Do not assume that your application will be accepted automatically after the final deadline. Check your status in the portal and follow the instructions of the immigration authority. If you receive a rejection notification or an instruction to leave Northern Cyprus, comply with the deadline stated in it. In the usual case, after such notification the Rules establish five days for departure.
