Magic Dancing Waters in Protaras

Updated: 2 months ago

When the sun disappears beyond the horizon and the Protaras waterfront gradually fills with holidaymakers, a performance begins that has been considered one of the main evening attractions of the eastern coast of the Republic of Cyprus for many years. Magic Dancing Waters — is not simply a musical fountain, but a large-scale light and music show where water, lasers, fire and music come together in a single performance.

Every season, thousands of tourists come here with their families to spend an evening in an unusual atmosphere. Thanks to the combination of modern technology, musical accompaniment and spectacular special effects, the show is equally interesting for both children and adults.

The history of Magic Dancing Waters

Magic Dancing Waters opened in Protaras in 1997 and became one of the first large-scale projects of its kind in Cyprus. Over the years, the show has been modernised several times: the equipment has been upgraded, the lighting effects have been improved, and new musical programmes and visual elements have been added.

Today, the complex is considered one of the island's best-known evening attractions. In almost three decades, it has welcomed millions of guests from different countries, while the show itself has received international industry awards in the fields of entertainment technology and tourist attractions on numerous occasions.

Despite constant technical updates, the concept of the performance remains unchanged — to create a spectacular show that the whole family can enjoy, regardless of age.

How the performance takes place

The show lasts approximately one hour. During this time, viewers witness several musical productions, each accompanied by its own lighting programme and water compositions.

To the music, hundreds of water jets rise to different heights, changing their shape and direction of movement in sync. Then laser projections, coloured lighting and smoke effects come into play, gradually transforming an ordinary fountain into a real theatre of water and light.

One of the most anticipated moments of the programme is the final part, featuring an imitation of a volcanic eruption. At this moment, fire, smoke effects, powerful water jets and light projections are used simultaneously, creating the impression of a genuine natural phenomenon.

The musical accompaniment includes both contemporary compositions and world-famous melodies, making the programme accessible to viewers of all ages.

Technology and special effects

Behind the apparent lightness of the performance lies a complex engineering system that controls every element of the show in real time.

The complex includes more than 18,000 water nozzles and over 12,000 light sources. During the performance, around 65 different water figures are created, while a huge water screen approximately 60 metres long is used for light and laser projections.

In addition to traditional dancing fountains, the show uses smoke machines, lasers, coloured architectural lighting and pyrotechnic effects. It is precisely the combination of water, light and fire that has made Magic Dancing Waters one of the most recognisable evening shows in the Republic of Cyprus.

Restaurant and bar

The complex has a restaurant and bar, so many guests arrive early to enjoy a relaxed evening before the performance begins. You can have dinner or order drinks here without leaving the viewing area, and most tables are positioned so that guests can watch the show during the performance.

The menu features international and Mediterranean cuisine, snacks, desserts, soft drinks, cocktails, wine and coffee. The bar is open from 19:00 to 22:00, allowing guests to order drinks both before the show begins and during it. Food and drinks are paid for separately and are not included in the admission ticket.
