Fire in Limassol Province Caused by Five-Year-Old Child
Police have identified the culprit behind a major fire that broke out yesterday in Suni, Limassol Province. The fire was started by a child just 5.5 years old.
Christos Andreu, a police spokesperson, reported on state radio that the young boy was playing with a lighter near dry grass.
Initially, the child's mother gave false information to mislead the police. She claimed she had seen a suspicious vehicle leaving the area as the fire started.
However, during a subsequent interrogation, the woman admitted that her son had been playing with the lighter. She has been formally charged and released pending a court appearance.
An investigation is ongoing into the possibility of her having provided false information to the police.
The fire destroyed approximately five hectares of vegetation and caused damage to several properties.
