In Izmir, a cat became the main star of the ballet Romeo and Juliet

The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet received an unexpected and entirely un-Shakespearean ending during a tour of a Russian ballet company in Turkey. At the most dramatic moment of the performance, a ginger cat came onto the stage and instantly shifted the audience’s attention from the tragedy to itself.

The unusual incident took place on June 10 in Izmir during a performance by the Imperial Russian Ballet theater. The show was held in an open-air amphitheater, where surprise guests on stage are not all that rare. However, this fluffy performer chose the most inappropriate moment for its entrance.

When, according to the plot, Romeo had already taken poison and was lying motionless, while the audience was waiting for the tragic climax, a ginger cat slowly walked onto the stage. Instead of passing by, the animal became interested in the main character and began playing with his hand and hair. The audience immediately responded with laughter and applause.

For the audience, this became one of the sweetest moments of the evening. For the performers, however, the situation was much more complicated.

The performer of Juliet, prima ballerina and laureate of international competitions Larisa Korsakova admitted that at that moment she felt not joy but professional disappointment.

According to her, the cat appeared exactly when the dramatic tension had reached its peak. A short pause in the music was meant to heighten the emotional effect of the tragic scene, but instead of tense silence the ballerina heard the audience laughing.

Korsakova noted that the main problem was not the animal itself, but the fact that the audience instantly fell out of the emotional state into which they had been led throughout the performance.

“It is impossible to bring the audience back into the same mood and state that I led them into throughout the whole performance,” the ballerina explained.

At the same time, the artist emphasized that she loves animals and is herself the owner of a cat and two dogs. However, during the performance she was not just Larisa Korsakova, but Juliet, so she could not simply stop the action and take the unexpected participant offstage.

The scene itself turned out to be so unusual that it quickly spread across social media. The published footage shows the cat feeling completely at ease among the set and the performers, as if it were a full-fledged participant in the production. Many users admitted that it was thanks to the fluffy guest that they became interested in ballet for the first time.

However, most comments were devoted not so much to the cat itself as to the performers’ composure. Viewers were impressed that the lead performers managed to keep a straight face and play one of the most emotionally difficult scenes in world classics to the very end, despite the laughter in the hall and the unexpected intervention of the four-legged “actor.”

For Turkey, such cases seem quite natural. Cats here enjoy special respect and move freely through streets, squares, cafés, shops and even historical landmarks. Local residents traditionally care for stray animals, so the appearance of a cat on a theater stage was seen by many as yet another reminder that in Turkey cats live by their own rules.

And if in Shakespeare’s original version the ending of Romeo and Juliet makes audiences cry, in Izmir one ginger feline improvisation managed to turn tragedy into a moment the audience will remember for a very long time. Perhaps for the first time in the history of the world stage, the main hero of the finale of the famous play was not Romeo or Juliet, but a cat that happened to drop by the performance.
