9,000 cases of phone use while driving in six months: even on buses

The Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Cyprus has released statistical data showing that over the past six months, automated traffic enforcement systems have recorded about 9,000 cases of drivers using mobile phones while driving. The ministry is particularly concerned that public transport drivers, including intercity and school buses, are regularly found among the violators.
Relevant authorities emphasize that the use of electronic devices behind the wheel remains one of the main causes of loss of concentration and road accidents on the island. In this regard, the Ministry of Transport, together with the police, is considering the possibility of tightening liability measures and strengthening enforcement of traffic rules, especially in the passenger transport sector, where drivers bear direct responsibility for the safety of citizens.
