AKEL proposes moving military camp away from the center of Liopetri

AKEL in the Famagusta district has appealed to the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, asking that the location of the military camp «Modestos Panteli» in the village of Liopetri be reviewed and that the possibility of moving it outside the residential area be considered.

The letter notes that over recent decades the settlement has grown significantly, and the military camp is now practically in the middle of a residential district. In addition, there is an elementary school nearby, and military storage facilities are located around it.

According to AKEL, this situation is causing concern among local residents, especially parents of schoolchildren. At the same time, the party emphasizes that it is not questioning the role of the National Guard, but is speaking solely in favor of public safety.

In this regard, AKEL asks the Ministry of Defence to say whether an assessment of potential risks has been carried out, what safety measures are in place for pupils and residents, whether a protection zone has been established around the facility, and whether the relocation of the camp and the storage facilities to another location is being considered.

The party believes that the safety of people, especially children, must remain the main priority, and calls on the authorities to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation and draw up a plan to move the military facility outside the residential part of Liopetri.
