Aradippou invests €4.25 million in a new solar power plant

The Municipality of Aradippou has announced a tender for the construction of a new solar power plant with a capacity of 3.61 MW. The project, costing 4.25 million euros, will be fully financed by the municipality's own funds without attracting European grants or government subsidies. Construction is planned to be completed within 18 months.
The new power plant will complement the existing solar installation operated by the municipality. In parallel, the city is participating in the European Ecorouts program, which provides for the transition of part of the transport to zero-emission electric power.
The city's Mayor, Christodoulos Partou, stated that the project is aimed at reducing electricity costs and decreasing dependence on external suppliers. According to him, the municipality is betting on long-term environmental and social solutions rather than short-term initiatives focused solely on obtaining subsidies.
The initiative complies with Cyprus's national energy and climate plan, under which the country has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 32% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. Municipal renewable energy projects are seen as an important part of achieving these goals.
For a city with a population of about 25,000, an investment of this scale is considered unusual for a municipal budget. Meanwhile, Aradippou has already become the first municipality in Cyprus to switch completely to renewable energy sources and abandon dependence on traditional power grids — a rare example even among European Union cities.
