22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Aradippou

The Larnaca District Court remanded an 22-year-old Sri Lankan national in custody for eight days on suspicion of attempting to murder his 33-year-old compatriot in Aradippou.

According to police, on the night of 19 July, the men were drinking alcohol with another acquaintance before an argument broke out between them. The conflict initially began in the yard of the house and then continued indoors. Investigators believe the suspect grabbed two kitchen knives and stabbed the other man seven times — in the chest, abdomen and arms.

The injured man was first taken to Larnaca Hospital and then transferred to Nicosia Hospital. He underwent surgery, is on a ventilator, and remains in critical condition.

The suspect fled the scene but was arrested by police about two hours later near the house. According to investigators, during the initial questioning he admitted injuring his friend.

Police are continuing their investigation. Detectives are expected to question around 20 witnesses, establish all the circumstances of the conflict, locate the alleged weapons and examine CCTV footage. The motive for the attack has not yet been established.
