Road safety: two traffic-light pedestrian crossings will be installed near Lady’s Mile in Limassol

The Limassol Municipality has approved the installation of two controlled PELICAN pedestrian crossings, equipped with traffic lights and push buttons, in the Lady's Mile roundabout area near Limassol’s New Port. The project has been fully coordinated with the Chief of Police of Cyprus and officially came into force on 24 June 2026.

Location and operating principle of the new crossings:
The road infrastructure facilities will be installed on both sides of the transport hub:
— Exact location. The crossings will appear on the access road to the New Port, directly adjacent to the Lady's Mile roundabout — one will be installed north of the interchange, the other — to the south.
— Traffic safety. The PELICAN systems are activated manually by pedestrians using a button, temporarily blocking the heavy flow of freight and passenger traffic with a red traffic signal, which is critically important for this busy port sector.

Context of the large-scale modernization of the coastal area:
The arrangement of controlled crossings is part of a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction and improvement of the Larnaca-Limassol-Akrotiri area, which the municipality has been developing for several years. Project specifications:
— Scope of work. The renovation program covers a coastline 6 to 8 kilometers long along the Akrotiri peninsula — from the New Port area to the final restaurant zone of the beach. The infrastructure includes the construction of pedestrian sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, roadside parking bays, street lighting, power lines, water supply, and stormwater drainage systems.
— Financial capacity. The total budget is estimated at between 7 and 10 million euros.

Environmental restrictions and status of the territories:
The implementation of the project has been delayed since 2017 due to the specific legal and environmental status of the land. Lady's Mile beach borders the state-protected Akrotiri wetlands, which serve as a nesting site for rare bird species and sea turtles. Any construction stages require mandatory approval from environmental experts from the BirdLife Cyprus association, which is included in the advisory committee under the Limassol municipality, as well as from the administration of the sovereign British bases, within whose boundaries this coastal area lies. The authorities have not yet announced a final completion date for the entire project.
