Great White Shark Filmed on Video by Divers for the First Time in the Mediterranean Sea
A group of volunteer divers from the organizations Ghost Diving and Healthy Seas, carrying out a cleanup of the seabed in the Strait of Sicily (between Sicily and Tunisia), captured a historic moment. During a dive to a depth of about 40 meters to remove abandoned fishing nets from a sunken ship, a great white shark suddenly emerged from the depths in front of them.
Although the presence of this species in the Mediterranean Sea had previously been recorded by researchers through indirect signs or accidental catches, this is the first time in history that an adult great white shark has been filmed directly underwater by divers in this region.
Researchers believe the predator was attracted by fish tangled in the so-called «ghost nets». The shark showed curiosity, circled the stunned divers several times and, without showing aggression, swam back into the blue. Scientists call these images unique and extremely valuable for studying the migration routes and behavior of this species, which is disappearing from the Mediterranean.
