Greater Limassol to build an intermunicipal shelter for stray dogs on a new site
The six municipalities that make up the Greater Limassol conglomerate have agreed on a new plot of land for the construction of the long-awaited intermunicipal shelter for stray dogs. The project, which had been stalled for years due to bureaucratic delays and protests from local residents, has finally received approval from the Town Planning Department. The new facility will be built on state land in the industrial zone of the municipality of Agios Athanasios, away from residential areas, so that the barking of animals will not disturb residents.
The construction of the modern center will fully address the acute shortage of places for stray animals in the district. According to the project, the shelter will meet all strict European veterinary standards: it will feature spacious individual enclosures, modern walking areas, a quarantine unit and a fully equipped veterinary clinic for the treatment, sterilization and microchipping of dogs. Funding for the construction work will be shared by the participating municipalities of Limassol, while operational management is planned to be handed over to specialized animal welfare organizations through a tender.
