Two Months of Searches: Family Finds Missing Father Among Unidentified Bodies in Larnaca Morgue
A scandal is brewing in Cyprus over the work of state medical institutions after the family of a man who went missing in March discovered him among unidentified bodies in the morgue of Larnaca hospital nearly two months after his death.
The shocking case came to light during the morning program «Πρωτοσέλιδο» on Sigma TV. According to the deceased man's son, Klavdios Antoniou, his father had gone to the hospital on his own on March 19 without informing his relatives. Doctors diagnosed him with cancer, but the man chose to keep the information from his family.
When the relatives began searching for him a few days later and contacted the hospital, they were told that no patient with such details was registered in the system. After that, the family unsuccessfully appealed to various medical institutions and state services, trying to find out his whereabouts.
Only on May 21, after police intervention, was it established that the man had died on March 26. According to the relatives, his body had all this time been among the unidentified in the morgue of Larnaca hospital.
The family accuses the responsible services of serious procedural violations, a lack of communication, and the inability to notify the patient's loved ones in time of his death. Additional questions were raised by the fate of the deceased's personal belongings: according to the relatives, part of his property was never returned to them.
In response to what happened, the family filed an official complaint with the Cyprus Organization of Health Services (OKYpY), demanding a full investigation into the circumstances of the case and an explanation for the failure in the notification system.
The relatives believe the tragedy has exposed serious shortcomings in the work of state hospitals and requires not only clarification of all the circumstances, but also measures to prevent similar cases in the future. In their view, irresponsibility and bureaucratic mistakes should not go unpunished.
