Prices in Republic of Cyprus supermarkets vary significantly amid rising inflation

The e-kalathi price comparison platform has revealed a significant difference in the cost of identical products at major supermarkets in the Republic of Cyprus amid continuing inflation growth.

According to the Consumer Protection Service, annual inflation rose to 3.1% following the outbreak of the crisis in the Middle East. Petroleum products saw the sharpest price increases — 21.2%, followed by agricultural products — 9%.

A comparison of 250 identical products at seven major supermarkets showed that the difference between the most expensive and the cheapest basket was 112.08 euros.

The most expensive basket cost 1,069.19 euros, while the cheapest cost 957.11 euros. The difference was 11.7%.

Over the month, prices rose the most for fresh fish and seafood — by 4.6%, baby diapers — by 2.5%, condensed milk — by 2.5%, bottled water — by 2.5%, and baby food — by 1.9%.

At the same time, prices fell for 28 product categories. The most significant price declines were recorded for fresh vegetables and herbs — 17.3%, frozen fish products — 3.3%, and sugar — 2.8%.

The Consumer Protection Service reminded consumers that prices do not always reflect differences in product quality and urged shoppers to compare offers independently before making a purchase.
