E-scooters in Cyprus may be impounded for up to 90 days

Cyprus’s Ministry of Transport has prepared a regulation that would allow e-scooters to be temporarily impounded for serious violations of the rules.

According to the document, the impoundment period will range from 30 to 90 days, depending on the violation. The regulation is expected to be submitted for public consultation shortly, after which it will undergo legal review.

E-scooters may be impounded, in particular, for riding on roads where the use of such devices is prohibited, being operated by a person under the age of 17, or exceeding the установленное speed limit of 25 km/h.

The minimum age for operating an e-scooter in Cyprus has already been raised from 14 to 17. The maximum permitted speed is 25 km/h.

Representatives of the Ministry of Transport note that the existing rules are sufficiently strict, but enforcement remains the main problem. Effective oversight requires regular inspections and a sufficient number of personnel.

The new regulation is intended to establish a mechanism for the temporary impoundment of e-scooters and strengthen enforcement of the rules.
