Energy Diplomacy in the Eastern Mediterranean: Cyprus Returns to the Spotlight
Cyprus has once again found itself at the center of geopolitical processes tied to the region’s energy security. The main focus is now on the revival of discussions around major infrastructure projects aimed at transporting natural gas to Europe and on aligning the interests of key players.
The agenda remains centered on plans to create the Great Sea Interconnector, which is expected to connect the power systems of Cyprus, Greece and Israel. At the same time, negotiations over the future of the EastMed offshore gas pipeline and alternative gas delivery options, including transport via LNG plants in Egypt, have intensified.
The current stage is marked by high diplomatic activity amid the EU’s drive to diversify its energy supply sources. The success of these projects will largely depend on the ability of the countries in the region — Cyprus, Greece, Israel and Egypt — to reach compromise on technical and commercial details, as well as to cope with the continuing geopolitical risks.
