ECB may raise rates as early as June due to strengthening inflation

The European Central Bank may move to raise interest rates at its June meeting amid rising inflationary risks. This was stated by ECB board member and Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Christos Patsalides, in an interview with Bloomberg.

According to him, the current economic situation in the eurozone continues to deteriorate, and steady price growth is increasing pressure on core inflation. “At the moment, the situation is worsening. Everything points toward an increase in interest rates,” Patsalides noted.

He emphasized that a possible rate hike does not necessarily mean the beginning of a new cycle of monetary policy tightening. According to him, the decision will depend on further developments, including geopolitical factors and the dynamics of energy prices.

Patsalides pointed out that one of the key factors of uncertainty remains the conflict in the Middle East, which continues to impact global energy markets and inflation in Europe. At the same time, he conceded that if the crisis is resolved quickly, the need for a rate hike might disappear.

Markets and most economists already expect the ECB to raise borrowing costs in June. This decision could affect the cost of loans, mortgages, and corporate financing across the eurozone, including Cyprus.

For the Cypriot economy, a further rise in rates means sustained high pressure on the real estate market and consumer lending. Simultaneously, the country's banking sector continues to benefit from higher interest income, which is already reflected positively in the financial results of the island's largest banks.
