Paphos farmers to block the road to the international airport over water shortages
Professional associations of farmers in the Paphos region have officially announced a large-scale protest action during which they plan to completely block vehicular traffic on the approach to Paphos International Airport. The reason for the drastic measures is a critical shortage of water for irrigating agricultural land, caused by strict restrictions imposed by the Water Development Department. Local farmers say that, due to the lack of irrigation, their crops are at risk of complete destruction, while state authorities are ignoring their numerous requests and are not offering alternative ways to resolve the water crisis.
The organizers of the action emphasize that blocking the road is a forced step aimed at drawing the government’s immediate attention to the catastrophic situation in the agricultural sector. The strike is expected to involve heavy agricultural machinery, including tractors, which will completely block the key transport artery leading to the airport. The exact time the blockade will begin will be announced in the coming hours, but local police are already preparing for serious traffic disruptions. All passengers departing from Paphos Airport on the day of the protests, as well as those meeting them and transport companies, are strongly advised to set off early and allow substantial extra time for the journey in order to avoid missing flights.
