Christodoulides and von der Leyen discussed Cyprus's accession to Schengen
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed in Paris the progress of Cyprus's preparations to join the Schengen area, as well as the situation surrounding the Cyprus settlement.
According to Deputy Government Spokesman Yiannis Antoniou, the main focus of the meeting was on completing the process of integrating Cyprus into Schengen. It is noted that the republic has already met all the technical requirements, and now it remains to wait for a political decision from EU member states.
During the talks, Christodoulides also thanked von der Leyen for supporting efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The head of the European Commission, in turn, said that the appointment of Raffaele Fitto as the EU Special Representative for Cyprus confirms Brussels' commitment to seeking a solution and reunifying the island.
