Christodoulides welcomed the appointment of the EU special envoy for Cyprus

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the decision by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to appoint European Commission Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as the European Union's special envoy on the Cyprus issue.

According to the president, the appointment of one of the European Commission's most senior officials shows the EU's growing attention to a Cyprus settlement and its readiness to play a more active role in the resumption of talks under UN auspices.

Christodoulides noted that the involvement of the European Union could give new momentum to the negotiation process, and also stressed that the development of relations between the EU and Turkey is directly linked to progress in resolving the Cyprus problem.

The president also thanked Ursula von der Leyen for her support and personal involvement in promoting initiatives related to the Cyprus settlement.
