Due to a lifeguards’ strike, Cyprus beaches were left unsupervised

A one-day strike by lifeguards in Cyprus, held on 24 June 2026, exposed critical gaps in the island’s tourist infrastructure. The first day of the strike looked catastrophic for the resort’s reputation: in Limassol, almost half of the lifeguard posts were closed, and on the popular Ladies’ Mile beach only one operating tower remained. In the Famagusta district, a key tourist hub, safety was completely shut down — none of the 30 stations were functioning. This precedent shows that water safety, declared by the authorities as a priority, is in practice held together by a seasonal staffing shortage that the central government has been ignoring for years.

The root of the problem lies in the destructive staffing policy of the Ministry of Interior and the municipalities. Short-term six-month contracts, which lifeguard service heads Sakis Nikolaou and Michalis Adamu point to, turn the profession of lifeguard into an unstable side job. There are practically no people willing to undergo rigorous training and bear criminal responsibility for other people’s lives for the sake of a six-month job on the island. As a result, beaches enter peak season with a huge staff shortage, while the remaining employees are forced to work under increased pressure, which directly reduces concentration and increases response times in emergencies.

The strikers’ demands to extend contracts to 10–12 months, raise salaries and improve insurance coverage are economically justified, but their implementation will run up against the authorities’ unwillingness to increase budget spending on permanent staff in the «off-season» months. However, saving on lifeguard salaries in this case is a strategic mistake. The very first series of tragic incidents on uncontrolled beaches such as Governor’s Beach will inflict financial damage on Cyprus’s international image that is incomparable with the cost of maintaining a full-year lifeguard service.
