Cyprus is building four desalination plants with a capacity of 180,000 cubic metres per day

Cyprus is continuing construction of four permanent desalination plants with a combined capacity of 180,000 cubic metres of water per day, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis said. The plants are being built in the eastern part of Limassol, in Agia Thekla (Agia Thekla), Polis Chrysochous (Polis Chrysochous) and Dekelia (Dekelia).

The minister spoke at the olive festival in Anglisides (Anglisides). According to him, improved hydrological conditions in 2026 allowed the Council of Ministers to revise water allocations in June and provide an additional 3.5 million cubic metres for irrigation, including through the Unified Southern Pipeline.

The government’s decision of 2 September, Senekis explained, serves the overall goal of “reducing dependence on rainfall and strengthening water security”. More than €200 million has been allocated for 2024–2030 to programmes for desalination, the reuse of treated water, reducing network losses and modernising infrastructure.

The minister also spoke about support for farmers. Total funding under the Common Agricultural Policy for 2023–2027 amounts to €454 million. Applications for subsidies totalling approximately €210 million have already been submitted under investment measures and programmes for new farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture, together with the Ministry of Finance and banks, is preparing new lending instruments on preferential terms. The e-Cofidi system is being introduced to make the movement of prices from field to shelf transparent, and the law on unfair trading practices is also being applied.

Public consultations on the future Common Agricultural Policy will begin on 8 October.
